Installation / Error Fix
How to install NSP & XCI ROMs, plus fixes for common black screens, crashes, DBI errors, sigpatches, and firmware issues.
How to Install ROM?
This guide covers installing Nintendo Switch game files in NSP and XCI formats on a CFW console and on PC/Android emulators.
Before you start
- Download a clean NSP or XCI from a trusted source.
- Have enough free space on your SD card or PC drive (game size + ~2β4 GB extra).
- For emulators: place prod.keys (and title.keys if needed) in the emulator keys folder.
- For real Switch: Atmosphere (or your CFW), sigpatches, and a working installer (DBI recommended).
Install on CFW Switch
- Copy the .nsp or .xci to your microSD (MTP, USB, or network).
- Open DBI (or Tinfoil / Awoo / TinWoo).
- Browse to the file β Install β choose SD or NAND.
- Wait until install finishes, then exit and launch the game from the home menu.
Install on emulator
- Open Ryujinx, Sudachi, Eden, or your Yuzu fork.
- Confirm keys (and firmware, if the emulator requires it) are loaded.
- Use File β Load or Install title from file / NSP and select the ROM.
- Add the game folder if asked, then double-click the title to play.
NSP vs XCI
NSP is the digital / eShop-style package β best for most installs and updates. XCI is a cartridge dump β also works on CFW and many emulators. Updates and DLC are usually separate NSP files; install the base game first.
Pokemon ZA black screen
If PokΓ©mon ZA (or similar PokΓ©mon titles) opens then stays on a black screen:
- Update firmware + sigpatches on CFW so they match what the game expects.
- On emulator, use a recent build and fresh prod.keys from a matching firmware dump.
- Install the latest game update after the base NSP/XCI.
- Disable experimental graphics mods / resolution scale temporarily and test again.
- Clear shader cache once, then relaunch (emulators only).
- Confirm the dump is not truncated β re-download if the file size looks wrong.
If the Switch logo appears then black screens forever, missing or outdated sigpatches are the most common cause on CFW.
Mario Kart stuck
Mario Kart stuck on loading, Nintendo logo, or "checking if the software can be played":
- Install the base game + latest update in the correct order (base first).
- Remove incomplete updates from Data Management, then reinstall the update NSP.
- On CFW: refresh sigpatches and reboot to payload after installing.
- On emulator: raise CPU accuracy / disable multiplayer mods; delete the game's save only as a last resort (back it up first).
- Online / Nintendo servers will fail on CFW β play offline or with LAN mods only.
FC26 installation error
FC26 (EA Sports FC) failing mid-install or showing an error code:
- These games are large β free at least the full game size + a few GB on the SD.
- Use DBI over USB instead of copying a huge file that may corrupt over WiβFi.
- Install base β update β DLC separately; do not merge broken multi-part archives.
- If DBI reports NCA / hash errors, the download is corrupted β get a new dump.
- On emulator, confirm keys support the title's firmware requirement before installing.
Eden crash
Eden emulator crashes on boot or when launching a game:
- Update Eden to the latest release; older builds crash on newer titles.
- Replace prod.keys / firmware with a matching set (wrong keys = instant crash).
- Update GPU drivers (NVIDIA Studio / latest AMD Adrenalin).
- Try Vulkan and OpenGL separately; turn off advanced enhancements (FSR, high res, etc.).
- Run Eden as a normal user (not broken portable paths with special characters).
- Delete the game's shader cache folder if crashes started after a bad session.
Sudachi black screen
Sudachi shows a black window or game never renders:
- Verify keys are loaded (Check in Sudachi settings / logs).
- Install system firmware inside Sudachi if the game requires a higher version.
- Switch graphics API (Vulkan β OpenGL) and disable disk shader cache once.
- Set accuracy to High / Normal instead of Unsafe for that title.
- Some games need the update NSP installed via Sudachi's install menu, not only "Load file".
DBI error
Common DBI install failures and fixes:
- NCA error / invalid ticket β missing sigpatches or wrong CFW version. Update Atmosphere + patches, reboot.
- Not enough space β free SD space or install to the other destination (SD/NAND).
- File I/O / MTP fail β use USB HDD mode or copy via hekate UMS instead of flaky MTP.
- Already installed β delete the title from Data Management, then reinstall clean.
- Partially written file β delete the broken NSP/XCI on SD and transfer again.
Keep DBI updated; older DBI builds mis-handle newer firmware title headers.
Sigpatch issue
Symptoms: games show a blank icon, "Could not start the software", or install succeeds but nothing launches.
- Install the latest sigpatches (or fusee/sys-patch equivalent) that match your Atmosphere + firmware.
- After copying patches to SD, fully reboot to payload (not just sleep).
- Do not mix patch packs from different Atmosphere versions.
- If you use sys-patch, confirm the module is enabled in the system modules list.
- Reinstall the game after patches are confirmed working.
Firmware mismatch
Error messages about required system version, or games that refuse to boot after a new dump:
- Check the ROM page for the required firmware and update CFW firmware with Daybreak (or your usual method).
- Always update Atmosphere + sigpatches together with firmware β never firmware alone.
- On emulators, install a firmware package that is equal or higher than the game requirement.
- Downgrading firmware is risky; prefer updating the console/emulator instead of seeking older dumps.
- After updating, reboot twice and try launching again.
