Dragon Quest VII Reimagined Switch NSP ROM is a cleverly designed, turn-based strategy RPG that’s significantly easier for beginners compared to the 2016 3DS remaster. However, it might disappoint fans of previous games. Minor changes, such as highlighting enemy weaknesses or invulnerability during combat, can make the game less challenging. Experienced RPG players might prefer a higher difficulty level and avoid the auto-combat mechanics. It’s been a long time since I’ve failed to beat the final boss on my first attempt in the Dragon Quest series, but that’s exactly what happened in Reimagined, despite extensive training. The result was more disappointment than victory. While this remaster isn’t a disaster, it doesn’t quite reach the level of satisfaction offered by 2D HD games or Dragon Quest XI. So, prepare for a completely different experience.
One of the conclusions I’ve drawn from my analysis of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined is that, despite all the improvements, the best enjoyment of the game is only possible with short play sessions. Due to its repetitive and cyclical gameplay, longer sessions reveal the superficiality of the redesigned world. The characters you encounter only hold your attention for a few moments, and their brief interactions are difficult to remember. You might think I’m criticizing some elements and mechanics of traditional role-playing games, but Dragon Quest VII’s structure clearly highlights the inherent weaknesses of these elements.
Its visual style is also unusual. Instead of adopting the HD-2D style used in the Erdrick trilogy remakes, the development team created a unique, hand-drawn aesthetic using detailed 3D models scanned from within the game.
