Blending fighting gameplay with story modes is often challenging, and this game is no exception. Its single-player mode struggles to balance an engaging story with exciting gameplay. However, the arena battles are dynamic and enjoyable, especially in multiplayer, striking a good balance between simplicity and depth.

Game Plot
The Hinokami Chronicles follows the manga and anime plot up through the “Infinity Train” arc. It tells the story of Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado, whose family is killed by demons and Nezuko is transformed into one. The game follows their quest for revenge and Nezuko’s fight to regain her humanity. Beautiful cinematic cutscenes advance the story, voiced in both English and Japanese by the original anime cast. No prior knowledge of the series is needed to understand the characters and plot.

Intuitive Combat Controls
Normal attacks and special moves each have dedicated buttons. Combining joystick directions with button presses triggers various special moves and three unique combos: one lifts opponents into the air, another pins them to the ground, and the third knocks them down.

Fighters can also throw, dodge, perform finishing moves, and activate two special bonuses: Empowerment and Dash. Empowerment boosts attacks and unlocks an extra combo option, while Dash grants unlimited energy briefly. These mechanics offer interesting counterplay without overwhelming new players.

However, the gameplay suffers from slow character movement, with no option to run faster, which can be frustrating when backtracking or retrieving items. Sometimes characters move even slower during dialogue, making those sections feel tedious.
