It’s been a long time since I’ve played a game that captivated me as much as the original Life is Strange, released in 2015. Thanks to the unique coming-of-age story of a rebellious and often shy teenage girl, it keeps me thinking as I explore every corner of Arcadia Bay, but without resorting to preaching or painful content. While numerous prequels, spin-offs, and sequels have been released since then, none have recaptured the magic of the first five games. Retaining the brilliance of the original, Life is Strange: Double Exposure takes the game in a new direction and elevates almost every aspect of the previous games.
What a pleasure to encounter Max Caulfield again, ten years after the events of Life is Strange! Even though she’s in her twenties, Max is almost the same as when we last saw her: still making quirky jokes, observing her surroundings, and most importantly, taking plenty of photographs. But growing up brings entirely new challenges. Instead of trying to please and fit in with everyone she met at Blackwell Academy, she now has to accept her role as a graduate student. Sometimes, when he remembers the embarrassing comments he made about his first game, or recalls his undergraduate years when he had to drink as much coffee as possible before exams, he realizes he’s matured.
